Cardiology Department:

The Department of Cardiology at RMI is one of the most organized and well established departments. It is manned by qualified and well trained personnel including 05 consultants, more than a dozen dedicated medical officers, nurses and properly trained technicians in all its sub-departments

Catheterization Laboratory

Catheterization Laboratory is the heart of our Cardiology Department. At the core of this department is the latest, state of the art, Toshiba Infinix CC digital imaging system. This is capable of performing imaging of heart, brain and arteries and veins of all parts of the body for adults as well as children. The system has total digital acquisition, storage and processing capability of all images. It has very advanced features like digital subtraction, super-imposition, enhancement and other processing functions which allow very high resolution images for diagnostic purposes.

The cath lab is manned by an experienced and trained team of cardiac technicians, nurses and doctors who are proficient in their respective jobs. The cath lab is available for all routine and emergency procedures, round the clock, seven days a week.

In addition to the hardware, cath lab has a vast, on-shelf stock of materials used in all diagnostic and interventional procedures like angiography, angioplasty, valve ballooning, pacemakers and others.

The cath lab is performing all diagnostic procedures like coronary angiography, peripheral angiography, cerebral angiography and venography, interventional procedures like coronary angioplasty & stenting, mitral, pulmonary aortic and tricuspid valve ballooning, device closure of ASD & PDA, permanent pacemaker insertion, peripheral, renal and carotid stenting and IVC filter placements. The spectrum of interventional procedures is ever expanding with the introduction of new procedures around the world.

All procedures in our cath lab are performed with special emphasis on patient safety, disinfection and quality. All this is done in spite of the fact that the charges for all these procedures have been kept competitive to government institutions and much lower than reputable private institutions in Peshawar as well as around the country.

Echocardiography Department is equipped with top of the line Toshiba Nemio 30 Color Doppler Echocardiography system. This system can perform routine Trans thoracic echocardiograms in adults & children, trans-esophageal echocardiography, carotid Doppler and other peripheral Doppler studies. This digital machine has excellent resolution and digital features for acquiring, processing and storing the images. All the echocardiograms are performed by a qualified and dedicated cardiac sonologist medical officer having special training in difficult congenital heart diseases in children. All the echocardiograms are supervised and countersigned by a consultant cardiologist. The department also imparts training to junior cardiac technicians and medical officers.

Exercise Testing Department

Exercise testing is an important part of evaluation of patients with suspected or diagnosed cardiac problems. RMI has state of the art Toshiba 9320K Stress Testing System. The patient is exercised on a treadmill while his 12 lead ECG is continuously monitored by a computerized machine which continuously processes and displays all the leads simultaneously. The machine has advanced signal averaging capability to filter out artifacts and produces high quality printout for accurate diagnosis. For those patients who can not perform exercise due to physical disability, the alternate method of pharmacological stress testing is employed. All the tests are performed by qualified technicians and are physician supervised. All the reports are prepared by medical officers and verified by consultant cardiologists before being issued to patients.

Future Plans

Although with our existing setup we can and are providing high quality care to most cardiac patients, we work at continuously enhancing our capabilities. We plan to add Holter Monitoring and Ambulatory Blood pressure monitoring facilities, EECP (External Electrical Counter Pulsation) and other newer diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in the near future. The addition of these facilities will further enhance our capabilities for diagnosing and treatment of cardiac diseases.
